Finally Woken -Jem

I first heard Finally Woken when Ms. Bean played it for me over the summer. Perhaps enchanted by the circumstances (most music is more enjoyable when that lady is around), I did not take not of the artist or album. Several months, and a free track gifted by the aforementioned mistress of music, later I found myself picking up a copy of this fine CD.

My initial reaction to hearing the music of Jem was, “wow, she sings very well for someone who does not speak English natively.” Chalk that up to my ignorance of geography. Jem not only speaks English (Wales, it turns out, is a region of the United Kingdom, and not some obscure Scandinavian country), but sings it with great skill.

The music on Finally Woken ranges from the smooth pop sounds of Finally Woken and Just a Ride to the insistent, nearly hip-hop, rhythms of They and Come on Closer. It is especially hard to select a favorite track on this album, because they are all quite solid. Looking at my playcounts, I would probably have to select 24. With its insistent synth-violin and dramatic guitars, not to mention the bells, this track pulls you in and simply races by.

Lyrically, Jem is diverse and interesting. Her lyrics range from cheekily questioning the authority of the unknown They who create the rules and expectations of society to serious contemplation of what is important in life on 24. Come on Closer is also interesting to me because it features a, strongly expressed, feminine perspective on love and desire.

I could go on, but there’s not much else that I really want to say about this album, mainly because so much of my reason for liking it has to do with the circumstances surrounding my introduction to it.

Think that I will close here and go back to listening to Jem.
